The Third Week In Your Baby's Development
The smart e-newsletter for Miyuki Maddox's first year!

Hi Pearl! Have you noticed yellow or brownish patches of skin on Miyuki Maddox's head or around her eyebrows? The appearance of these thick, crusty clusters of cells is known as cradle cap and is simply the result of Miyuki Maddox's skin glands producing too much of a waxy, oily substance called sebum.

Your Post-Pregnancy Body

Pearl, the joy of a new baby can be overshadowed at times by overwhelming feelings of anxiety and sadness. If these baby blues get a hold of you from time to time, be gentle with yourself and take solace in the fact that most women experience some mild depression after the birth of a child.

However, if the blues don't go away after a couple of weeks or get worse, you may have a more serious condition called postpartum depression.

If you are breastfeeding, be sure you are drinking enough water and eating a balanced diet. It takes a lot of energy to feed your little bundle! To produce plenty of milk for your baby, you should drink at least 6 to 8 glasses of water a day and consume an extra 300 to 500 calories.

Your New Baby

At three weeks, Miyuki Maddox may start digging her heels into whatever surface she is lying on, testing her legs a bit. Her eyesight is still limited, but she loves making eye contact with you, especially while nursing. She should also be gaining back her birth weight now so you can check her percentile on our growth charts.

Miyuki Maddox will probably stay on her own schedule for a while, so allow Miyuki Maddox to decide when she wants to eat and sleep. When she's upset, womb-like sounds will help calm her. Also try patting Miyuki Maddox gently on the back or bottom to the beat of your heart; these familiar rhythms are still fresh in her mind and will help to relax her. Rocking is also very calming to Miyuki Maddox - if you haven't invested in a rocking chair, it may be a worthwhile addition to the nursery. She will continue to enjoy any and all skin-to-skin cuddling, especially when she is nursing. Dads are great in this area (the skin-to-skin contact. . . not so much the breastfeeding). The quick removal of a shirt and a cozy blanket may be all that's needed to lull Miyuki Maddox off to sleep.

Does Miyuki Maddox have a birthmark? Many babies are born with these usually harmless marks. They come in a wide range of shapes, sizes, and colors - including cafe au lait spots, port wine stains, Hemangioma, Mongolian spots, angel kisses, and stork bites - and may be found anywhere on your baby's body. Some birthmarks are visible at birth, while others may not show up for several days or weeks after. Many marks go away on their own in the first few years of life; although some are permanent, and may even grow larger or darker as your child ages.

Your Baby Journal

Pearl, it's important to remember that any sad feelings you may be experiencing might be caused by your hormones adjusting to post-pregnancy levels. The baby blues are very common among new mothers and you may feel better if you acknowledge and express these feelings. Writing about how you feel is often a good emotional release. Use your journal to write about any fears or sadness you are feeling right now. Take a moment to write today.

A Quote Worth Repeating

"When I approach a child, he inspires in me two sentiments; tenderness for what he is, and respect for what he may become."

- Louis Pasteur

This Week's E-poll

Are you experiencing the baby blues?

A Tip from the Trenches

Many babies have sensitive skin and can have a reaction to the chemicals found in most commercial baby wipes. If your baby gets a rash from these wipes, try using cosmetic facial pads and water. You can keep pre-soaked pads in a small, re-sealable bag and carry them with you. They're gentle, inexpensive, and effective.
